Das bitterböse Ende einer Zeitreise

Endlich mal wieder ein Roman, der mich am Ende überrascht hat: Ben Eltons Time and Time Again, im Taschenbuch 2015 bei Black Swan erschienen.

Ex-Soldat Hugh Stanton wird aus einer ungefähren Jetztzeit ins Jahr 1914 zurückgeschickt. Dort soll er den Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs verhindern, indem er das Attentat auf Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo vereitelt. Dadurch soll Europa großes Leid und ein weiterer Krieg erspart werden, so malt sich das jedenfalls die Geheimorganisation aus, die Stanton in die Vergangenheit schickt.

Erfunden hat die ganze Sache mit der Zeitreise und dem Geheimbund Isaac Newton. Der ist übrigens auch für die Magie in Ben Aaronovitchs Peter Grant-Romanen (zuletzt: Foxglove Summer) verantwortlich. Die biografische Notiz am Anfang von Eltons Buch macht mich auf jeden Fall neugierig. Vielleicht sollte ich mir mal eine Biografie über den Herren zulegen.

Time and Time Again ist kein ganz typischer Elton, denn es ist wenig durchsetzt mit seinem üblichen bitterbösen Humor. Bitterböse überrascht allerdings das Ende. Auf jeden Fall lesenswert!

Time travel ending badly

Finally found a novel again that managed to surprise me at the end: Ben Elton’s Time and Time Again, published in paperback by Black Swan in 2015.

Ex-soldier Hugh Stanton is sent from roundabout our time into 1914, charged with the task to prevent the outbreak of the First World War by foiling the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. Europe should thus be spared a time of suffering and another war, at least according to the secret organisation which sends Stanton into the past.

Isaac Newton is responsible for both the organisation as well as time travel. The man is also credited with the invention of ‘modern’ magic in Ben Aaronovitch’s Peter Grant novels (most recent: Foxglove Summer). The notice on his life at the beginning of Elton’s book certainly made me curious. Maybe I should get my hands on a biography soon.

Time and Time Again is not your typical Elton, not suffused with the usual biting humour. The ending arrives as biting as they come, however. Definitely worth a read!
